Prescription Drugs
Prescription medication misuse, including opioids, depressants, and stimulants, occurs when medications are taken in a way that differs from the guidance of your healthcare professional. This includes:
Taking medications that are not prescribed to you
Exceedng the prescribed dosage
Using prescriptin drugs for non-medical purposes
Are you over the dose?
Four Ways to Prevent Prescription Drug Misuse and Abuse
Count Your Medications Regularly
It is recommended to count your medications at least every 2 weeks. This will ensure that you are taking your medications as prescribed and help to prevent theft.
Lock Your Medications
Keep your medications in a lock box or secured cabinet. This protects children and teens from accidental ingestion and possible overdose.
Do Not Share Your Medications
Prescriptions are tailored to individuals based on factors like age, weight, and other meds. Taking someone else's medicine can be dangerous.
Drop Your Medications
Properly disposing of medications once they have expired or unused protects you, your loved ones and the environment. Each April and October, the DEA's National Take Back Day is held, and there are permanent drop box locations available all year long. Here are the locations in Sullivan County:
