Prescription medication misuse, including opioids, depressants, and stimulants, occurs when medications are taken in a way that differs from the guidance of your healthcare professional. This includes:
Taking medications that are not prescribed to you
Exceeding the prescribed dosage
Using prescription drugs for non-medical purposes
Sharing prescription medications is strictly illegal in Tennessee and can lead to severe misdemeanor or felony criminal charges.

Safely Secure Your Medications
Keep your medications in a lock box or secured cabinet so they won't be accidentally taken by children or pets, or misused by teens and others visiting your home. Check with your pharmacist on which type of secured storage is best for you and your family. All Food City Pharmacies in Sullivan County now offer medication lock boxes for purchase. Contact SCAD for additional options at 423-742-2991.
Properly Dispose of Unused or Expired Medications
Dispose of medications you no longer need by:
Dropping them off at one of our area’s convenient and safe year round locations listed below
Take them to your nearest DEA Drug Take Back held the 4th Saturday of every April and October
Take them to the Sullivan County Hazardous Waste Disposal Event the 4th Saturday of every September.
Note: This is the only location that will accept needles and sharps places in a sturdy plastic bottle.
